Wyke Goals:

First Half
Drighlington arrived with a big set of lads who quickly showed what a well drilled passing outfit they were. Their intensions were laid down early when they first hit the cross bar and the follow up was put over the bar. Wyke were chasing shadows and within the next two minutes, the visitors had rattled in three goals past a hapless Owen in goal. It could have been another for Drighlington in the next minute but their strong forward was wide of the goal. It wasn’t until the middle of the half that Wyke got within reach of the Drighlington goal when Charlie S. sent a shot just wide. Drighlington came back at Wyke and were unfortunate to hit the post after a well-worked passing move. Wyke responded well and put a bit of pressure on the Drighlington goal. Ethan’s persistence caused the keeper to fumble the ball and it broke to Charlie S. who shot first time but straight back at the keeper. A Drighlington clearance then broke to Lewis on half way and he thumped the ball back at goal but the keeper was in a good position to collect it. The visitors bounced back and claimed their fourth goal of the game. They could have made it five before half time if Connor had not got in a vital block in front of goal.

Second Half
Drighlington carried on where they had left off in the first period by dominating play and bombarding the Wyke goal. Their first shot of the half went over the bar and the next one was well saved by Connor who had swapped with Owen at half time. It didn’t take the visitors long to rattle up numbers five and six as Wyke were second best to most balls and couldn’t clear their own half. Goal kicks continue to be a disadvantage when Wyke are not quick enough to collect the ball from the kick/roll out. Drighlington netted their seventh goal before making some substitutions that allowed Wyke more of the ball. Ethan had a snap shot which was saved and then had another good effort that was tipped around the post for a corner. Drighlington had a shot next that went wide before Zac had a little run and shot that was too close to the keeper. Wyke’s best chance came well in to the second half when Owen was fouled on the edge of the area. He took the free kick himself and blasted it in to the Drighlington wall. The ball fell kindly to Ethan but his shot was blocked and when the ball broke back to Owen his shot was blocked as well by the tight-nit visiting defence. Drighlington counter attacked from this and scored their eighth and final un-answered goal of the game.

Summary
This week some very good visitors outplayed Wyke. Owen, Connor, Charlie S and Lewis maintained the score line with some resolute defending. Zac and Charlie B worked hard in midfield while Ethan tried in vain up front. There are some lessons to learn here but a score to forget and turn the focus on to the next match.

Wyke Goals: Bailey and Jack

First Half
Drighlington began well and were soon testing the Wyke defence. Two shots sailed wide before Nathan made a couple of fine saves. Bailey was a strong influence again and his good running and ball control resulted in Wyke opening the scoring. Bailey ripped through the visitor’s midfield and defence and tucked the ball away neatly past the keeper. Drighlington came back with a shot that Sam blocked well for a corner that was caught by Nathan. Bailey had a good run and passed to Jack who shot just wide of the post. Drighlington also had another shot off target before Wyke doubled their lead. Some great play on the wing by Matthew found him some space and when he passed to Jack in the middle, he turned and shot first time in to the bottom left hand corner of the net. Drighlington were again denied by some good keeping by Nathan but his intercepted roll out was despatched for the visitor’s first goal. This spurred Drighlington on and they next shot wide before Jarad got a good block in to deny them again. Drighlington then had three corners in succession and finally brought the score level when Wyke couldn’t clear the ball from their own area. Nathan had to make two excellent saves to keep them out before Drighlington took the lead for the first time in the game with another intercepted keeper roll out. Wyke came back however and were unlucky not to go in to the break on level terms. Matthew had a good run and shot that was saved. The ball broke to him again soon after but again his shot was to close to the keeper. Wyke finished the half the better with Bailey testing the Drighlington keeper again with a fierce shot.

Second Half
Drighlington dominated the second period. They quickly got their fourth before Sam, who swapped with Nathan at half time, made a fine save. A Drighlington free kick then produced another good save from Sam but he could only direct it upwards and the ball was well headed in to the net for the visitor’s fifth goal. Five soon became six and then another away effort went wide of the goal. Sam saved a long shot next and then held on well to a corner. He watched another shot go wide before being helpless to prevent the visitor’s seventh, created by a magnificent cross. Wyke’s scrambling defence kept out Drighlington for a while longer as Sam, Jarad, Nathan and Jack threw their bodies in the line of the ball. Drighlington then hit the post before a corner and shot rattled the post again. The next shot went wide and Sam managed to get his hands on the next one. Sam made another good save before the final Drighlington effort went wide of the post. Sadly there were no Wyke efforts on goal in the half.

Summary
After a terrific start, Wyke were over-powered by a slick passing Drighlington team. Nathan played well in goal and midfield. Jarad made some timely tackles. Sam stood firm at the back. Jack showed promise and scored a fine debut goal. Bailey made some great runs and was rewarded with a goal. Matthew was dangerous in front of goal while Ben added stability at the back. A very promising start but after ten minutes the visitors gained confidence and were un-stoppable. However, significant progress in ability is shining through.
