Shelf A v Wyke Wanderers A

Wyke A
Charlie Bailey
Connor Barran
Ethan Downey
Lewis Evans
Owen Khan (captain)
Charlie Smith

Score: 2-1 (HT 1-0)

Wyke Goals: Ethan

First Half
Wyke were soon on the back foot when a Shelf cross was saved by Connor and then cleared by Charlie B. Shelf then sent a shot wide before Connor made another good save. Connor then made a magnificent save with his foot as Shelf looked likely to score. Owen then headed a Shelf free kick behind. A Shelf player met the corner and Connor did well to push it around the post for another corner. This time a Shelf header struck the post and fell behind for a goal kick. Shelf then had another free kick that was blasted wide. The Wyke defence was eventually beaten shortly before half time when a Shelf cross was knocked away by Connor but fell kindly to an un-marked Shelf player who had time to control, step forward and power the ball in to the roof of the net. Wyke went in to half time lucky to be only one down with no efforts on goal to speak of.

Second Half
Shelf began where they had left off by peppering the Wyke goal. Charlie B made a fine save before watching another effort drift wide. Then with the slight slope in their favour, Wyke began to go forward. Charlie S had a good solo run and shot but the ball went wide. Wyke pressure then produced a corner. Charlie S swung the ball in to the middle where Owen hit a first time effort toward goal but it was deflected wide for another corner. Charlie S then had a shot saved and moments later could have found an un-marked Connor in the centre but lost possession at a crucial time. Shelf then came back and Charlie B made a great save when it looked easier for the striker to score. The resulting corner was well caught by Charlie B. Wyke then got the break they were looking for. Good work by Lewis and Owen saw Ethan receive the ball just inside the Shelf half. He dribbled his way past two Shelf defenders and then smashed the ball in to the back of the net to level the scores. Ethan could have made it two soon after but after another good solo run he lost the ball with teammates in support. Charlie S then passed to Owen who shot over. Connor took a long throw to Charlie S whose shot was blocked behind for a corner as Wyke pushed for the winner. The corner came to nothing and Shelf counter-attacked. As the ball worked its way to the left, there appeared to be little danger but a Shelf forward struck a hopeful cross / shot that somehow managed to wriggle through Charlie B’s hands at the near post. Wyke bounced back and Charlie B took a goal kick to Charlie S who shot at goal but a Shelf defender got in the way to block the ball out for a corner that came to nothing. Shelf ended the match strongly and could have wrapped the game up with two shots that drifted wide, both when one on one with Charlie B.

Summary
After soaking up a lot of pressure in the first half, Wyke did enough in the second period to warrant at least a draw. Unfortunately, in pushing for the winner they got caught on the break and came away with nothing. Connor had a great first half in goal before finding good space but no service in the second half. Ethan defended very strongly before moving forward and scoring a brilliant equaliser. Owen made some crunching tackles and supported the front line well. Charlie B worked tirelessly but couldn’t find a way through before reverting to goal keeper and making some super saves. Charlie S tried hard up front but was thwarted by a good Shelf defence. Lewis was his reliable self at the back, mopping up any loose balls and starting most of Wyke’s attacks.

Shelf B v Wyke Wanderers B

Wyke B
Nathan Aylott
Ben Boocock
Matthew Brumfitt
Bailey Clarkson
Daniel Gledhill (captain)
Jack Hewitt-Hill
Jarad Muff
Ben Peacock

Score: 3-5 (HT 3-2)

Wyke Goals: Jack (2), Nathan, Danny & Bailey

First Half
After a messy start, Shelf had the first effort on goal but the ball drifted wide. Jack then had a shot that was well saved. The keeper then threw the ball straight back to Jack and he gratefully slotted it back in to the open net for the opening goal of the game. Shelf then fought back. One big, strong and impressive home player ran the length of the pitch before shooting wide when it looked easier to score. Shelf then hit the post and the ball rebounded off Jarad and in to the net to bring the scores level. Jarad made a good save soon after. Shelf then hit the post again and Wyke managed to scramble the ball clear. Shelf had another effort well saved by Jarad but the ball went to a Shelf player who coolly put it in to the net for the home side to take the lead once more. Wyke came back and a good move started by Nathan saw Ben P play in Jack for a chance but his shot was saved. The same three players then did the reverse with Jack passing to Ben P who this time passed to Nathan whose shot was again saved. Wyke won a corner next but Shelf gained possession and countered up field to score their third. Wyke wouldn’t lie down though and got another goal back before the break when Nathan finished a good little run with a cool finish.

Second Half
Wyke had the slope in their favour in the second half and made it tell. Bailey had a good run and shot and the ball struck the post before falling to Danny and he fired it back across goal and in to the bottom left hand corner of the goal to bring the scores level. Shelf then shot wide before Bailey went on another run and won a free kick on the right side of the penalty area when the keeper handled the ball outside of the area. Bailey took the free kick and powered the ball directly in to the top left hand corner of the net. Jack had two chances later on but was wide of the mark. Matthew had a good run and cross next that was deflected in to the path of Jack and he made no mistake this time by neatly passing the ball in to the back of the net. Bailey had a fine solo run and shot that was well saved before Shelf had one last attack that saw the ball drift wide again.

Summary
This was a fantastic team effort, with everyone working hard for each other to produce a great away victory. Jarad made some good saves and defended strongly. Danny worked hard and was rewarded with his first goal of the season. Jack was much involved and his work rate brought him two great goals. Nathan played well and scored a good solo goal. Matthew supported well up front. Bailey showed good running skills and scored a magnificent goal from a free kick that Beckham himself would have been proud of. Ben B and Ben P played good games in all areas.

It was also worthy to note that Hayden’s absence had once more brought about an away victory!

A special mention is worthy for the good support from Mat, Gemma and Glyn in organising the teams.
