Wyke Wanderers A v Dewsbury Rangers A

Wyke A
Charlie Bailey
Connor Barran
Ethan Downey (captain)
Lewis Evans
Owen Khan
Zachary Walsh

Score: 0-4 (HT 0-1)

Wyke Goals:

First Half
Dewsbury started brightly, forcing Connor in to some last ditch tackles to thwart them and Owen making some great saves. Wyke almost broke the deadlock when a loose clearance from Dewsbury fell to Connor mid-way in his own half and his thundering volley unfortunately hit the Dewsbury keeper, the cross bar and then the keeper again before resting on the goal-line. Dewsbury responded with a well-worked goal that left Owen with little chance of saving. Lewis and Ethan were competing strongly in midfield and tried to link up with Zac in attack but Dewsbury were first to most of the loose balls. After a shaky start, Charlie got more in to the game and began to win most of his challenges. The next chance fell to Dewsbury when they won a penalty after Charlie handled in his own penalty area. The penalty kick was hit with venom but Owen made a fantastic block and the ball was cleared away. Wyke’s only other notable attempt on goal came just before half-time when Connor again tried his luck from distance and was frustrated to see the ball zip a foot past the wrong side of the left hand post.

Second Half
Wyke began strongly with Ethan setting up Zac but his tame shot was saved. Zac had another chance soon after but this time he drilled the ball narrowly wide. Dewsbury were not having trouble in front of goal though and after some intense pressure they scored a quick-fire double, as the Wyke players were unable to clear their lines. Lewis tried to get a consolation goal but after a great run through the Dewsbury defence, his shot was well saved. Dewsbury scored a fourth near the end to run out convincing winners.

Summary
Wyke will rue their bad luck and missed chances but were second best on the day, although they did show brief glimpses of class and will certainly improve as the season goes along. Charlie Bailey made a good first appearance.

Ben Boocock (captain)
Matthew Brumfitt
Bailey Clarkson
Daniel Gledhill
Jarad Muff
Sam Preston

Score: 0-5 (HT 0-2)

Wyke Goals:

First Half
The first piece of goalmouth action saw Dewsbury score a well-worked passing goal. They should have been two up moments later when a handball in the penalty area by Nathan gifted the visitors with a penalty. Wyke were lucky to see the ball drift wide of the right hand post. Dewsbury kept up the pressure and deservedly got their second goal. Bailey made some decent stops in goal to keep the score down before the break. Ben led by example at the back, working tenaciously to win possession. Danny got more in to the game after a slow start and showed some good touches. Sam and Nathan ran hard in midfield but struggled against the Dewsbury players. Matthew didn’t see much of the ball up front. He had a couple of half chances to break away but found the visiting defenders more than capable of marshalling him away from goal so that he couldn’t get a shot in.

Second Half
Dewsbury scored a quick third goal before Wyke began to show some team spirit led by a determined Ben at the back. Dewsbury coped with the odd Wyke break away and got a fourth goal mid way through the half. Sam made a good save to deny the visitors another goal. Nathan had a rare chance at the other end but his shot was easily saved. Straight after this, Nathan set up Matthew but his shot was also comfortably saved. Dewsbury got a deserved fifth goal before the end to make it a double win on the day.

Summary
Wyke were given the run around in their opening game of the new season but can take heart that not all of their opponents will be as strong as Dewsbury. Ben made a bright first appearance and Danny, given time and experience, will be another asset to the developing squad.

MoM: Ben
