Connor Barran
Bailey Clarkson
Ethan Downey
Lewis Evans (captain)
Owen Khan
Charlie Smith

Score: 1-3 (HT 1-1)

Wyke Goals: Ethan, Owen & Charlie B.

First Half
After an even opening couple of minutes Wyke created the first chance. Charlie S. played in Owen whose shot was blocked for a corner. Charlie S. took the corner to Owen on the edge of the area and he fired the ball inches wide. Clifton broke away to open the scoring when after a great solo run, their forward drilled an un-stoppable shot past Corner and in to the top right hand corner of the net. Wyke were only behind for a minute though. Charlie S. created himself room for a shot and his goal bound effort could only be parried by the Clifton keeper in to the path of Ethan who tapped the ball in to an empty net. Clifton came straight back and would have been in front again if it wasn’t for a fantastic diving save from Connor to prevent the ball going in to the top left hand corner of the goal. Connor positioned himself well to save the next Clifton attempt on goal before Charlie S. created another chance out of nothing but drove his shot a foot over the crossbar. Charlie S. had another chance soon after but this time his shot was too close to the keeper. Clifton crafted a corner at the other end and Connor met it with a strong two-fisted punch out of the penalty area but the ball broke to a Clifton player who fired the ball towards the bottom left hand corner of the goal. However, Connor pounced again to tip it round the post for another corner that came to nothing as Lewis cleared easily to Charlie B. who was winning everything in midfield. Wyke created their own corner next. It was taken short and the ball was worked to Lewis on the by-line. His cross-shot avoided everybody and rolled agonisingly in front of the goal line, begging to be tapped in but no Wyke players were close enough to it. The last action of the half saw Wyke create another chance as Lewis played a sublime pass through the Clifton defence for Owen to run on to but the keeper beat him to the ball and cleared it away into touch.

Second Half
Wyke carried on where they had left off in the first period and it was mostly one-way traffic down the slope as the home side wilted. Charlie S. showed incredible determination on the right and his will to win the ball drove him to the by-line where he fired in a cross/shot that hit both posts before rolling nicely to an un-marked Owen to tap in Wyke’s second goal at the back post. The ferocity of the Charlie S. shot seemed to deflate the inflatable goal posts a bit and the Clifton team soon followed suit as Wyke poured on the pressure. Bailey took a throw in to Charlie S. who shot just wide before Charlie B. used his strength to carve himself an opening but he too shot wide. Lewis passed to Charlie S. next and his shot was well saved by the keeper. Charlie B. then passed to Lewis who played in Charlie S. once more but it wasn’t to be his day in front of goal as the ball was saved again. Wyke began to pass the ball around in style as their confidence grew but it was a solo effort from Charlie B. that brought the third and last goal as he made room for a shot and then calmly stroked it in to the bottom right hand corner of the net. Owen had a solo run next but the ball ran away from him and in to the hands of the home keeper. Charlie B. had another run and his final shot was blocked away by a Clifton defender for a corner. Lewis took the corner and Owen met it with a fine header that looped towards goal but the keeper grabbed it in time. Wyke soon had another corner as they looked for a fourth goal but Owen’s first time shot was well blocked away. Bailey took a throw in to Charlie B. a minute later and he shot wide of the mark this time. Charlie S. took another throw soon after to Owen and his shot went wide too. As the final whistle approached, Clifton had a late surge. First, the redundant Connor was quick off his line to clear the ball in to touch and thwart the on-rushing striker. The resulting throw from Clifton created a chance that Owen blocked brilliantly before he threw himself in front of the ball again to block for a second time but the ball rolled back to the Clifton striker who was just about to strike on goal when Connor rushed out to block him again and then dive on the ball.

Summary
Wyke ran out convincing winners at Clifton to earn their first confidence boosting victory of the season. Connor was brilliant in goal. Lewis won every challenge and showed great vision. Charlie S. ran his heart out and was unlucky not to score a hat-trick. Ethan scored a good poachers goal before dropping to defence. Owen grew in stature as the game went on and he too scored a great poachers goal. (MoM) Charlie B. had an immense game, beginning most attacks and scoring his first goal for the club. Bailey fitted in well in his brief second half appearance.

MoM: Charlie B.

Clifton Rangers B v Wyke Wanderers B

Wyke B
Nathan Aylott
Matthew Brumfitt
Bailey Clarkson
Daniel Gledhill
Jack Hewitt-Hill (captain)
Jarad Muff
Sam Preston

Score: 2-2 (HT 1-0)

Wyke Goals: Nathan & Matthew

First Half
Sam was the first keeper in action when he tipped a goal bound shot round the post for a corner. The corner created another shooting chance for Clifton but it went wide of the goal. Jack created Wyke’s first chance when he played in Matthew whose shot drifted wide. Matthew then had a solo run and shot but the keeper saved well. Jarad defended brilliantly and was cutting out all of the Clifton attacks. Nathan had a solo run and shot next but the home keeper was equal to it again. The home side should have gone in front mid-way through the half but the post saved Wyke and the rebound went thankfully wide. Jarad continued to defend strongly and was clearing all through balls in to touch or out for corners. Good passing between Nathan and Matthew then created an opening for Nathan to shoot on goal but once again his aim was wide of the mark. Jack had a shot next which was well saved before Clifton countered and shot wide. Nathan then had a cross/shot saved and Clifton broke again to shoot wide. Nathan had another shot well saved before Clifton took a fortunate lead just before half time. A Clifton player who returned the ball in to an empty net intercepted Sam’s attempted goal kick before it got out of the penalty area. It seemed to be rough justice in an end-to-end game. Nathan nearly brought Wyke level before the break but his shot was saved. On the stroke of half time Wyke were nearly gifted a goal when a Wyke corner was hit towards his own goal by a Clifton defender but the keeper made a tremendous save.

Second Half
Wyke made a determined start after the break and Nathan soon had a chance but shot straight at the keeper. Sam defended well to cut out a Clifton attack before Danny set up Jack for a shot that was well saved again. Clifton broke away and extended their lead to two but Wyke came straight back and scored their first when Nathan had a fine solo run and shot that finally beat the solid home keeper. This spurred on Wyke and some fine passing between Nathan and Matthew created an opening for Nathan to shoot but the keeper tipped it round the post for a corner. Danny took the corner and Matthew miss-kicked his shot and the ball was cleared. Bailey made a great save at the other end and gave the ball to Sam who ran the full length of the pitch, beating three Clifton would-be tacklers before shooting straight at the well positioned keeper. Matthew then worked his way in to the penalty area and was fouled by the last defender to win a penalty. He took it himself but shot the ball agonisingly wide of the left hand post. Bailey then made a fantastic save at the other end. Matthew’s persistence then won a corner for Wyke but the ball was cleared. Sam then made another good break before passing to Matthew who made no mistake this time by firing the ball in to the net to bring the scores level. Bailey made another good save. Matthew had a run and shot that was saved before Bailey was called in to action again to deny the home side from going back in front. Wyke then won a free kick that Matthew passed to Jack, who shot at goal but the keeper palmed it around the post for a corner. As both sides looked for the winner it was the keepers who shone out. Jarad took two corners in a row but Wyke couldn’t find a way through. Clifton had the last chance of the game but the ball was fired wide of the goal and the honours were shared.

Summary
Wyke played their best game of the season to come from behind and earn a draw at Clifton and could have won it near the end. Sam was outstanding all over the pitch. (MoM) Nathan was the key to most attacks and scored a great goal. Jarad was fantastic in defence. Jack was strong in midfield. Matthew scored a deserved goal. Danny won some crucial tackles and Bailey made some brilliant saves.

MoM: Nathan
