Wyke A v Shelf A

Wyke A
Connor Barran
Ethan Downey
Lewis Evans
Owen Khan
Charlie Smith
Zachary Walsh

Score: 2-1

Wyke scorers: Khan, Downey

Wyke A won a great game against local rivals Shelf A on Sunday.
Walsh had the first chance of the game but his shot was well saved. Smith followed with a run and shot which was deflected for a corner. On the stroke of half-time, Downey made a run and shot towards goal but the keeper saved again to ensure stalemate at the break.
Barran, who had little to do in goal in the first half, swapped places with Smith at half-time and battled well in midfield. Evans and Khan were solid at the back with Downey and Walsh an ever-present attacking threat. Walsh made a strong run early in the second half and kept up the pressure when the defence looked to have stopped the attack which meant the ball broke to Khan outside the area and he smashed a drive in to the corner of the net to put Wyke one up. Downey made it two when he finished in style after a good dribble through the defence. Walsh nearly made it three but his shot was well saved. Shelf got a consolation goal in the last minute but it was too little and too late.

Wyke B v Shelf B

Wyke B
Nathan Aylott
Matthew Brumfitt
Bailey Clarkson
Adam Kirby
Jarad Muff
Sam Preston
Ethan Downey (substitute)

Score: 4-3

Wyke scorers: Muff, Aylott (2), Downey

Wyke B made it a double on the day for the under sevens with a gutsy display in a very entertaining game. Kirby created the first chance of the game for Brumfitt but his shot was saved. Aylott tried his luck next but again found the keepers hands. Muff was the next to have a go and this time his shot found the Shelf net to put Wyke one up. Wyke remained on the attack and Brumfitt shot wide and then found the keeper in his way once more. Aylott shot at goal next but the ball drifted wide. Brumfitt managed to put the ball in the net but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the keeper. Aylott did score the second soon after though. A long period of midfield play followed before Shelf pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time to make it 2-1 at the break.
Wyke started brightly in the second half and were soon on the attack again. Aylott had a shot saved and then Brumfitt found the keeper in the way also. Then Clarkson played in Aylott and his shot was saved but he followed up and scored his second and Wyke’s third. This seemed to spur Shelf on and in a couple of minutes they were suddenly level at 3-3. Downey came on as a sub for the last few minutes and it was he who scored the winning goal in what was a thrilling encounter.

This was the first time that Hayden has been able to field an A and B team with all twelve players being available. Each and every one of them can be proud of their performance and will no doubt enjoy the bragging rights at school this week.

Ethan Downey was the Man of the Matches
