Match Report- v Brighouse (Away) 06/02/10 Empty Match Report- v Brighouse (Away) 06/02/10

Wyke Wanderers played their first league game since October, and unfortunately it ended in defeat against local rivals Brighouse Juniors.

Brighouse started strongly and from the off, Wyke were on the back foot. An early corner wasn’t defended, and the ball trickled into the bottom corner.

Wyke struggled to get the ball out of their half for much of the first half, and Brighouse made their chances count scoring another three to give them a 4-0 cushion at half time.

Wyke did create some chances in the first half, Scott Morris made an excellent run, and his shot whistled past the post, he also had another shot saved by the keeper. New signing Mikey Brooksbank showed some of his talent in the first half, creating some great runs down the right wing, but they didn’t manage to meet a Wyke head.

Half Time- 4-0 Brighouse

The second half saw a much better display from the away team, with Wyke returning to a 4-4-2 formation. The defence were still struggling to deal with heavy attacking from Brighouse.

Mikey Brooksbank scored an excellent goal from 20 yards to give Wyke some hope of getting back into the game, however Brighouse went to the other side of the pitch and instantly restored their 4 goal lead.

Wyke made some very good attacking chances in the second half and were unlucky not to score a few more. Nathan Khan led the midfield, giving 100% and winning possession, he linked up well with Jack Lamch and Mikey Brooksbank. Connor Rhodes arrived to the match for the last 10 minutes and made an instant impact, with some strong runs through the middle, but was unable to get a shot in.

Jack Lamch bagged a goal, to make the game 6-2. It fell to him on the edge of the six yard box, and he scored a well deserved goal. Jack had put in a lot of effort during the match, and he was rewarded with a close range effort.

Brighouse scored again, but Wyke continued to stay positive, and battled on. Again Wyke created some good attacking football, with Jack, Connor, Scott and Nathan making some good passing moves. Connor Rhodes broke through the Brighouse defence late on and took it wide, crossing it in for Mikey Brooksbank to slot in his second of the game.

Wyke 3-7 Brighouse

Man of the Match: The Wyke defence was very deep today meaning the midfield had a hard job on their hands because of the large gap left in the middle of the pitch. Nathan put in a proper Captain’s performance, leading by example by battling right to the full time whistle and staying positive.

Goals

Mikey Brooksbank x2, Jack Lamch

Manager Comments

It was the first game back for us today, so I knew it would be a hard game anyway. Brighouse are a very good team, and we didn’t play so well today. The main problem was that our defence were too deep, this means we were giving Brighouse too much of the ball. We need to work together to look at being more attacking, and making sure our defence is filling that gap left in the middle of the pitch. Our midfield put in an excellent performance today, as did out attackers. I’m still very pleased at our second half performance which was 3-3. We battled all the way through the game and I’m proud by our attitude, because we stayed positive and didn’t give up, so well done boys...We are getting better!!!
