Gomersal & Cleckheaton A v Wyke Wanderers A

Wyke A
Charlie Bailey
Connor Barran (captain)
Ethan Downey
Lewis Evans
Owen Khan
Charlie Smith

Score: 2-1 (HT 1-0)

Wyke Goals: Ethan

First Half
Gomersal began fast and Owen was soon in action making two great saves. Wyke responded well and Charlie S. himself had two long distance efforts well held by the home keeper. Owen was next in action, making another fine save. Ethan then had a half chance but he could only balloon his shot over the cross bar. The game was fast and tackles were strong with not many goal chances. However, Gomersal managed to find a way through the Wyke defence before half time when Owen was slightly unsighted by a shot through legs and couldn’t react in time to save it from crossing the line. Connor made a brilliant block soon after to deny the home side doubling their lead before the break.

Second Half
Wyke were inspired after the half time team talk. Ethan went on a long solo run before firing the ball past the stricken Gomersal keeper to make the score line level. His usual run away aeroplane celebration was reminiscent of the Adebayor against Arsenal issue the other week! He could have made it two after the restart but his shot went unfortunately the wrong side of the left hand post. Gomersal bounced back in to action and Charlie S. was forced in to two magnificent saves. Lewis then fed a sublime pass through to Ethan in space but again his shot drifted wide of the goal. Charlie S then made another vital save. Wyke again got on top of their game and won a corner after some neat footwork from Charlie B. Lewis swung in the corner and Owen met the ball with a terrific strike that rattled the cross bar. The goal kick broke to Wyke in midfield and when the ball found Owen, he struck a hard shot just over the cross bar this time. Wyke should really have gone in front later on but the Gomersal keeper made a brilliant double save, first from Owen and then from Lewis before the ball broke back to Owen and he could only spoon the ball over the cross bar. At the other end Connor was cutting out most of the Gomersal attacks, one that resulted in him loosing his balance and him ending up in a leg extended head/neck stand like an up-side down star jump that had to be seen to be believed, honestly! As the game looked to be heading for a draw Gomersal got a renewed endeavour and a through ball that landed between Connor and Charlie S caused indecision which resulted in Connor lobbing his own keeper and clearing the cross bar by a heart-stopping centimetre to give the home side a corner. Apparently he was trying an overhead clearance! The corner was cleared but Gomersal came straight back at Wyke and claimed a fortunate winner when the ball broke to an un-marked Gomersal player in the penalty area and he gave Charlie S little chance of saving the day. There was just enough time left for Charlie S to make another great save before the final whistle.

Summary
A fantastic all round effort from Wyke. They deserved to win this game but in the end couldn’t take their chances and Gomersal did although it was noted that the timekeeping was a bit in consistent in the two halves. Owen was good in goal and then had the main chances to win the game. Charlie B was a strong force all over the pitch and was involved in a lot of Wyke’s attacks. Connor was secure at the back and got Wyke moving with some good long throw-ins. Ethan was dangerous upfront and got a well-deserved first goal of the season. Charlie S made some strong forward runs in the first half before keeping goal safely in the second period. Lewis was tenacious in the tackle and made some brilliant passes and forward runs. On this evidence it will not be long before Wyke chalk up their first win of the season.

Wyke B
Nathan Aylott (captain)
Ben Boocock
Matthew Brumfitt
Bailey Clarkson
Daniel Gledhill
Jarad Muff
Sam Preston

Score: 8-4 (HT 4-1)

Wyke Goals: Matthew, Nathan, Bailey, and OG.

First Half
Bailey began brightly with a run that should have brought a corner but soon after this his volley stung the fingers of the Gomersal keeper. At the other end, Jarad was soon in action making a good save. He was helpless a minute later though when the home side opened the scoring. The action was end-to-end and Jarad was called upon straight from the re-start to make a fine save. Bailey continued to torment the Gomersal players with some skilful dribbling but ran out of room and support near goal. Ben was subbed off the field after only 5 minutes after the ball struck him hard in the face. Bailey had another mazy run and shot which was well blocked out for a corner. Wyke were then awarded a free kick that Sam took and played a great ball in to Nathan whose spin and turn resulted in a blocked shot. Bailey had a shot blocked again after that before Nathan fired at goal, only to see a desperate clearance off the line by the Gomersal defence. Wyke appeared frustrated by their bad luck and failure to equalise so it was no surprise to see Gomersal come more back in to the game. Jarad kept them at bay for a while with a stunning full length diving save when the ball looked destined for the bottom corner. Bailey raced away once more but saw his final shot well saved. Jarad made another good save before Gomersal had a pressure phase in play that brought them three goals in as many minutes. Wyke would not lie down though and came straight back with their own opening goal scored by Matthew after a neat bit of skill and clinical finish. However, Gomersal bounced back again and could have been out of sight if it wasn’t for three tremendous saves by Jarad before half time.

Second Half
Ben came back on after recovering from his earlier knock and played in goal for the second period. It was Wyke who started the better after the break with Bailey’s cross to Matthew nearly bringing the next goal but his goal-bound shot was tipped around the post for a corner. Bailey took the corner and the ball went straight to Matthew who directed it goal wards only to see a Gomersal defender in the way. Ben was called upon then to make his first save which he did comfortably. Bailey made another attack out of nothing with his pace and skilful ball control before defenders outnumbered him. Ben made another good stop next but as with Jarad in the first half, the keeper’s roll out was well read by the opposition forwards and Gomersal rattled in number five. Matthew then went up the other end and had a shot blocked before the ball was back in the Wyke half and Ben was in action again, making a good pouncing save. Wyke were really getting in to their stride now and won another corner. Bailey swung a great ball in to the danger area and a Gomersal player deflected it in to their own net. Within one minute Wyke made the score 5-3 when Nathan made some tenacious tackles and would not give up chasing the ball until he had deposited it firmly in the back of the net. With their tails up, Wyke pressurised the home sides goal. Nathan forced a corner but Gomersal were alive to the threat this time. Gomersal broke away and Ben had to be alert to save a goal bound shot. He did a repeat performance a minute later but then just as before, Gomersal comfortably intercepted his roll out and they easily scored their sixth. Bailey was unlucky not to score next when his shot was well held by the Gomersal keeper. The little dynamo was soon rewarded though when he won another corner. He took it himself and when the ball broke back towards him he fired a bullet shot in to the top right corner of the goal. Jarad could have made the finale a tense one a minute later but his shot just rolled wide of the left hand post. Gomersal finished the last couple of minutes the stronger team and when Ben couldn’t hold on to a fierce shot it was the Gomersal forward who was first to the loose ball to poke it home for number seven. In the final minute, Gomersal scored the best goal of the game. One of their big strong midfielders went on a shot determined run in to the inside right channel before unleashing an unstoppable shot in to the top left hand corner of the net. There was no time left after that for Wyke to respond.

Summary
What a pulsating game of football with a much-improved performance from the Wyke team. Their never-say-die attitude brought four well-deserved goals on the day. Bailey was outstanding in attack and Sam was a rock at the back. Jarad and Ben made some superb saves that stopped Gomersal from going in to double figures. Nathan got better as the game went on and Danny and Matthew gave strong supporting roles.
