After a disappointing home defeat to Northowram last week, the Wanderers were hoping to return to winning ways, but faced a tough test against 3rd placed Ossett Town, a team who were also vying for the title after five wins in their last six, and a victory over Northowram.

Wyke again succumbed to a defeat, leaving their title chances looking much less doubtful.

The Wanderers started off deflated once again, with Ossett looking like a far better team, Wyke created some chances but Mikey, Connor and Scott all had chances wide of the mark.

Calvin Barker made a fine save after 7 minutes to keep the Wanderers in the game, but then Ossett made Wyke pay after Barker let in a poor goal, which the Wyke defence hadn’t closed down. Ossett had a well deserved lead.

Wyke did create some chances, but the Ossett Goalkeeper was on fire, and made several good saves to deny Connor Rhodes and Mikey Brooksbank.

Ossett scored a second after 20 minutes, a brilliant cross was met by a slight touch from the Ossett Striker which trickled into the back of the net.

Wyke did start to improve their performance towards the back end of the half, expecially after Nathan Khan rose to a Mikey Brooksbank corner and scored a well needed goal back for the Wanderers on 28 minutes.

Wyke kept trying to score, but to be fair the Ossett defence were proving a match for the usually on-fire Wyke strike force.

Half Time- Ossett 2-1 Wyke.

After a shaky start to the second half, Wyke had much of the ball. Nathan Khan was having a very good game in the middle, after a poor start and won a lot of balls, however Mikey Brooksbank didn’t seem to have his usual spark, and Connor Rhodes was having a hard time against the big Ossett defenders.

Defensively Wyke did well, Damien Hields once again did a great job at the back, and Jake Gilderdale was on top form, putting in an amazing last ditch slide tackle to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity.

However it wasn’t to be Wyke day in front of goal. Again Scott Morris had a shot well saved and Mikey Brooksbank couldn’t find any space to get a clear shot in.

Ossett put the final nail in the coffin, scoring an unmarked header from a corner with 10 minutes to go to kill off any Wyke comeback aspirations.

Final Score- Ossett Town 3-1 Wyke Wanderers.

Goals

Nathan Khan (28)

Man of the Match: Jake Gilderdale
Jake played very well today, he was strong in the tackle, put in some good headers, and his distribution was very good, playing in Jack on the right wing several times, he also put in one of the best tackles I have ever seen at junior football.

Dave’s Comments

Today was another frustrating game, because we didn’t play badly. It was another off-game for our attacking players, which is a shame, but it does happen, they have been brilliant this season though. Defensively we looked a lot stronger again which I am really pleased about, and its good to see our midfield looking better and playing better football. We need to put these two slip-ups past us and work hard now if we are to have any chance of winning the league… Chins up boys!!
