Wyke returned to winning ways in style today. A confident display, and good teamwork
gave them their first win in 5 games, and their second win of the season. Wyke
had a point to prove against their opposition Saville Town after a 3-1 defeat
to them in pre-season.

Wyke had a change from their usual bad start, and actually started off fantastically! Andy
and Dave both stressed they wanted a positive and strong start. The boys didn’t
disappoint, and within the first 2 minutes, Connor whipped a ball into the area,
which was spilled by the keeper, and Quinn Riley was there to net the ball and
give Wyke the lead.

Wyke continued to be strong throughout the first half. Tai, Dom and Nathan were
bossing the centre of the pitch and Wyke had much of the play. Connor Rhodes
and Jake Gilderdale linked up brilliantly, and caused all sorts of problems for
the Saville defence. Wyke could have extended their lead further, with attempts
from Tai Pedder, Quinn Riley and Jake Gilderdale being saved by the keeper.
Connor Rhodes also had a couple of efforts, but his performance as a provider
was excellent, he made some top through-balls through to his team-mates .

At the back, Wyke looked good. Particularly the full backs Matty Dignam and Louis Muff
who were constantly being tested against the Saville Wingers. Nothing was
getting through them. Owen Hanson and Joe Mac were also playing well together,
even the balls over the top were being won by Wyke Wanderers defenders. There
were few attempts from Saville in the first half, with Joe Couble putting in a
steady performance between the sticks.

Wyke were again rewarded for constant pressure. Matty Dignam struck the ball from 15
yards into the roof of the net to give them a 2 goal cushion.

Half time. Wyke lead 2-0 and certainly deserve to be in front.

Saville responded with a goal very early on in the second half, and Wyke were on the
back foot a little. They had taken their feet off the gas, and Saville scored a
one on one, from a ball played over the top.

What followed was a very shaky and nervous performance from Wyke, were Saville had a
couple of opportunities to get back into the game. Joe Couble made a couple of
important saves, and Owen and Joe Mac did well to cope with the Saville players
who were not coming forward in numbers.

The Wyke midfield came back into form, and realised that they needed to work harder.
Nathan Khan and Dom Pickersgill put in a brilliant performance for the last 20
minutes of the game, and gave Wyke Wanderers the chance to get forward and
attack. Jake was brilliant on the left wing, and again linked up well with
Connor Rhodes, and another couple of chances fell to Tai Pedder, which he
couldn’t put in the net. In the end another well struck cross from Connor was
not dealt with by the Saville defence and Skipper, Nathan Khan was there to
coolly place the ball past the Keeper, restoring Wyke’s 2 goal lead.

Saville Town lost a little confidence after Nathan’s key goal, and Wyke had a little
more of the attack. Saville were trying to put the ball over the top of the
Wyke defence, but Owen Hanson and Louis
Muff were excellent in getting the ball to safety.

With 5 minutes to go, Nathan Khan had a brilliant run, and broke free of the defence.
He placed the ball past the keeper, for his second of the game, and Wyke’s 4th.

Full Time:
Wyke 4-1 Saville Town

Man of
the Match

Tough one today, because it could have gone to 6 or 7 players today, so Andy and I gave
one each!!

Man of the Match: Jake Gilderdale. Jake was awesome on the left today, he and Connor
worked so well together and he was a constant threat down the left hand side.

Man of the Match: Louis Muff. Louis put in a very solid performance today. He read the
game very well, and on many occasion he dropped in behind the centre-backs to
provide cover. Also he stopped any left wing attacks with ease, and his
clearances were crucial to the Wyke attacks.

Goals:
Quinn Riley, Nathan Khan x2, Matthew Dignam

Come on You Wanderers. Nice One today boys. Dead proud of you all!! Almost as good as the
Mighty Reds beating Man U!!! Anyway.....We also played so well today, not just
good football, we were confident and looked like we were enjoying ourselves.
That is what will win us games!! Staying positive is really important in
football, especially when they scored to get the game back to 2-1. We kept
battling, especially in midfield, and we had most of the attacking play, and we
really deserved to win 4-1!! Brill performance and Brill result. Well done
boys!!
