After a nice long break, it was back to business as usual for the new Under 13’s as they kick off their pre-season preparations with a friendly against rivals Howden Clough B. With Wyke Wanderers wanting to mount a title challenge this season, Howden Clough could well be their biggest rivals.

Wyke started off strongly, with Mikey Brooksbank having an early chance to open the scoring, but he put it just wide.

Moments later Matty Dignam ran the ball out of defence and played the ball over to Connor Rhodes who’s shot was well saved by the Clough Keeper.

The Wyke defence managed to remain strong for the first 15 minutes of the game, with debutant- Abel- starting his Wyke career with some strong tackles to keep Howden Clough at bay.

Tai Pedder, in the holding midfield position, played some great balls through to Mikey and Connor, But Howden Clough did very well to intercept. Tai himself had the next half-chance, but it was a speculative effort from 30 yards and it whistled past the post.

Howden Clough started to turn the tide on Wyke, and they were rewarded for their domination with 20 mitnutes gone. Abel couldn’t clear the ball and a Clough shot was well saved by Keeper Joe McLoughlin, but the ball was fired into the net on the rebound. Clough now led 1-0.

Wyke nearly levelled the score seconds later, Mikey Brooksbank broke down the right and took it deep, with a low hard cross from the byeline. Connor managed to get to the ball but fired over the bar from close range.

After 24 minutes, Connor Rhodes played a great ball over to Mikey Brooksbank who showed his awesome speed and strength to win the ball from the speedy Howden Clough Number 10, and Mikey fired the shot in to give Wyke a well deserved equaliser.

5 minutes later, Wyke Wanderers took the lead against the run of play. Nathan Khan received the ball 25 yards out, on the edge of the area, and in pure Steven Gerrard style, he smashed the ball into the top corner.

Howden Clough responded instantly to going behind, with constant pressure on Wyke Wanderers, with Jake and Abel having to work hard to keep the Howden Clough strikers away.

However a three minute blip, and Wyke somehow managed to find themselves behind. The Howden Clough attacks proved too strong for Wyke, and on the 36th, 28th and 39th minutes of the game, Wyke crumbled and were now trailing 4-2.

Half Time- Wyke 2-4 Howden Clough

Finally Joe Couble had turned up so Wyke had their number 1 keeper back, Although Joe Mcloughlin had done a very good job at deputising.

Wyke put the poor end to the first half behind them, and came out fighting in the second half. Mikey Brooksbank pulled out a brilliant dragback turn and had a shot from distance which just dipped over the bar.

They came close again, Nathan kneeing the ball wide from a Mikey corner.

Joe Couble was called in to make a couple of steady saves, but other than that Wyke were now in control, but just couldn’t finish.

After 14 minutes, Wyke finally got the breakthrough they needed. A great lofted ball over the top from Tai Pedder was met by Connor Rhodes who ran in on goal and fired it past the keeper. Wyke were now only 4-3 behind.

5 minutes later, Connor Rhodes was the key man again, this time he received the ball from Joe McLoughlin, who had ran the ball out from defence and played the ball over the top. Connor played a great ball into his partner Mikey Brooksbank who belted the ball into the back of the net. Wyke now had their deserved equaliser.

This match was already proving to be full of twists and turns, and it didn’t disappoint as once again the tide turned for Wyke. Not even a minute after Mikey had put Wyke back in the game, Jack Lamch slid the ball through to Connor, who muscled off the last defender and coolly curled the ball into the bottom corner. Wyke were now in front!

27 minutes gone in the second half, Wyke edged further in front. Mikey received the ball and played another through-ball to Connor Rhodes. Connor wasn’t going to miss this one, and he placed it past the keeper into the near corner.

Within the last ten minutes of play, Howden Clough turned up the pace and once again proved too much to handle. They scored two in the last 10 minutes to leave the scores level.

It had been a great game of twists and turns with both teams playing some excellent football. In truth a draw was a fair result.

Goals

Goals

Connor Rhodes x3, Mikey Brooksbank x2, Nathan Khan

Man of the Match:- Connor Rhodes. A fantastic performance from Connor today. He scored three very good goals and also notched up an assist. His pace and strength proved too much for the Howden defence, and he linked up very well with Mikey Brooksbank.

Manager Comments
I am delighted with our performance guys. I thought we might have got a bit of a hammering, with a large pitch, only 1 sub, but I am really happy that we managed to get a draw. Howden will be one of the best teams in the league this year, and for us to pull a draw out of the bag is quality! I’m loving it  Can’t wait for the season now!!
