Wyke Under 12’s slumped to their first defeat of the season, losing by 7 goals to 1 against an energetic Howden Clough Team.

Howden started much the stronger team, and Wyke were very messy at the back and struggled to cope with the Howden Clough attacking moves. Owen and Tai started slowly, and there were several balls over the top which led to one-on-ones. Joe Couble was in form in goals and made some good saves to keep the score at 0-0.

Wyke did have their fair share of chances in the first half, Jack Lamch hitting the bar, and Connor Rhodes put one wide. However it was Wyke who opened up the scoring, when Nathan Khan hit a great shot from 25 yards, which lobbed the keeper. Wyke were leading!

Wyke held the lead for about 8 minutes, and could have even extended it, with Jake Gilderdale having a shot which was well saved by the Clough keeper.
Howden Clough still continued to cause problems for Wyke at the back, and another through ball was latched onto and they equalised. 1-1

Just before the stroke of half-time Wyke let another goal slip in, from a long throw. It should really have been cleared by the Wyke defence, but the Howden Clough player got their first, and in a reversal of fortunes, Wyke were going into the 2nd half trailing by two goals to one.

In all fairness, Wyke hadn’t really got going, and the Wyke defence were not coping well with the strong attack of Howden Clough.

Wyke conceded a goal early on in the second half, 3-1, then a penalty was conceded which was put away by Howden Clough as they extended their lead to 4-1.

Although Wyke continued to battle, sloppy goals were given away which gave Howden Clough a 5-1 lead.

Wyke had a stroke of fortune as they were awarded a penalty, however Jack Lamch hit the bar, and Howden Clough made a counter attack and scored another.

Joe Couble played very well in the second half, and made some very good saves. The Wyke team’s morale was very low, and finally they let in another to give Howden Clough a strong 7-1 result.
The result certainly flattered Howden Clough, because for large parts of the game Wyke played some good football, but Connor Rhodes had little service from the midfield, and Wyke did spend a lot of the second half defending.

Man of the Match: Joe Couble, Joe made some very good saves, and had a very busy game. Although he let in 7 goals, it could have been much more today.

Goals: Nathan Khan

Dave’s Comments

Today was a bit of a hard lesson. We need to be strong defensively or we will lose games. I thought in parts we played some good football, but we let ourselves down at the back, not getting the ball cleared etc. It wasn’t a poor game for individuals, it was a poor game for the whole team. However we need to keep working and keep playing our football. Howden will probably be the strongest team in the league this season, so we need to move on, forget about it and concentrate on our next game. Sometimes we don’t play well, and its just one of those things.
